Middelburg is a quiet Karoo village known for it's woolen products and Karoo lamb. Local artists, leather factory, pure woollen products manufacturers, mohair weaving factory and herbalist, all display their products in shops in town.
The Karoo Hartland Festival is held seasonally at these times:
Autumn: 1 - 2 May 2009 (Painting & writing)
Winter: 3 - 5 July 2009 (Agriculture)
Spring: 4 - 6 Sept 2009 (Food & Herbs)
Summer: 13 - 15 Nov 2009 (Photography & Stars)
Historical places and monuments can be visited, some by prior arrangements; for example the Grootfontein Agricultural Institute, previously a British Peace Keeping Camp after the Anglo Boer War, Chair Monument, "Schoombee's Klip", Middelburg Cultural History Museum, etc.
Karoo Accommodation in Middelburg,Eastern Cape - review for Karoo Country Inn.
If you're looking for a Karoo hotel, with good old fashioned hospitality and really nice accommodation, The Karoo Country Inn in Middelburg, Eastern Cape, is the ideal overnight stop.
Apparently, this grand old Cape Victorian Karoo Hotel was originally built in 1853, and has been beautifully restored to what she is today.
They serve a great full English buffet breakfast every morning, the 'country' kind of breakfast that can keep you going all day, and there's a swimming pool for those hot Karoo days.
There's not a lot of Middelburg self catering accommodation on offer, just a couple of bed & breakfasts and a Karoo guest farm or two, both of which I will investigate on my next trip when looking for Eastern Cape accommodation.
